Some Artistic Roof Styles to Consider

It’s easy to think of your roof as the structure that keeps out the rain. If it looks nice, that’s a bonus. But some see their roof as another site of creativity that can not only please them but enhance their home’s curb appeal. Here are some roof styles to think about if you’re thinking of a roof renovation.

Gable Roofs

Gable roofs are some of the most popular roofs in the United States. They are basically triangular, but they can be long and wide with low slopes or tall and narrow with steep slopes. Gables can be at the front of the house or the sides. A house can have a gable at the front or on the sides. Alternatively, a house can have an aesthetically pleasing arrangement of several gables. An attached shed can come with a half-gabled roof. A salt box style house has a gable roof with one slope longer than the other. Dormer windows can also have their own little gable roofs.

Domed Roofs

Domed roofs are typically seen on large and stately buildings. These buildings are often in the early classical revival style and are frequently state capital buildings. Domed roofs are also seen in places of worship. But what if you were designing an average-sized house and you wanted a domed roof? These roofs are often paired with other types of roofs, including gable or hipped roofs, unless the entire building is circular, as it is in a geodesic home.

There are different types of domed roofs. There’s the onion dome roof, which is seen on Russian Orthodox churches, faceted domes, domes that are low and wide or high and pointed, and hemispherical domes. A conical roof is also considered a type of dome. Like other roofs, domes can be made with different materials. These include asphalt shingles, slate, concrete, tile and even stained glass.

Butterfly Roofs

These are truly alternative roofs that you’ll find on modern style buildings from the mid-20th century. Named because of their resemblance to the opened wings of a butterfly, they’re also called inverted gable roofs because the triangle is upside down. This type of roof gives the house a striking appearance, especially if it’s paired with glass curtain walls. Like dome roofs, butterfly roofs take a lot of skill for a roofing contractor to build. This makes them expensive. But the curb appeal of a well-built and well-maintained house with a butterfly roof is unparalleled.
